Block paving driveway Hayes Bromley

The Project
Mr & Mrs Williams from Hayes in Bromley wanted to replace their ageing gravel driveway with something more attractive and low-maintenance. The existing surface was uneven, prone to potholes, and caused water to pool near the garage entrance. They needed a durable solution that would cope with everyday use, look smart, and deal effectively with surface water.

Our Recommendation
After a thorough inspection of the site and discussion with the homeowners, we recommended installing a new block-paved driveway. Block paving offers a classic, neat finish and can be laid with a slight fall to encourage rainwater to drain away. To ensure no flooding or water pooling, we planned to fit Aco channel drains along the perimeter and recess the existing manhole covers flush with the new surface. We proposed a three-day programme to complete all works smoothly without rushing, allowing each stage to settle properly.

The Installation
First, we cleared away the old broken concrete, loose bricks and rubble down to firm ground, as you can see in the “before” photo. We then dug out to the right depth and laid a thick layer of crushed stone, compacting it with a plate compactor to create a solid, level base. Around the edges we installed sturdy concrete and timber restraints to hold the paving in place. The existing manhole covers were fitted into recessed frames so they sit neatly flush with the new surface, and an Aco channel drain was set along the low edge to catch rainwater. We chose a mix of red and brown blocks laid in a classic herringbone pattern, with a contrasting grey block border for a tidy finish. Once all the blocks were in place, kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints and the whole driveway was compacted one final time, giving a smooth, even finish ready for immediate use. 

The Result
In just three days, Mr & Mrs Williams gained a stunning, even driveway that enhances their kerb appeal and provides a stable, hard-wearing surface for their cars. The recessed manholes blend seamlessly into the paving, and the Aco drains ensure no more puddles after rain. They were thrilled with the transformation and appreciated the tidy, professional service from start to finish.
