The Project

Mrs Anderson, from Bromley, wanted to enhance her garden with a raised patio that would provide a practical and stylish outdoor space for entertaining and relaxing. The existing garden had sloped, uneven ground and no structured area for outdoor furniture. She was looking for a contemporary finish that would require minimal maintenance and remain attractive for years to come.

Our Recommendation

After assessing the garden layout and discussing Mrs Anderson’s vision, we proposed constructing a raised porcelain patio complete with new retaining walls and integrated steps. Porcelain tiles offer a modern, sleek appearance and are ideal for patios due to their resistance to staining, moss growth and weathering.

To ensure a strong and stable structure, we recommended building the patio base using Type 1 hardcore, which would be compacted using machinery to provide maximum support. The retaining walls would not only hold back the soil but also serve as an attractive feature, framing the new patio. We advised a four-day schedule to complete the works efficiently while allowing enough time for precision at each stage.

The Installation

We began by clearing and preparing the site, removing excess soil and debris to achieve the desired patio height. A solid sub-base was then formed using Type 1 MOT hardcore, which was thoroughly machine compacted to provide a firm foundation.

Next, we constructed robust retaining walls using concrete blocks, carefully levelled and aligned to enclose the raised patio area. Once set, we installed new steps leading from the lower garden level up to the patio, providing safe and practical access.

With the structural groundwork complete, we laid the porcelain tiles over a suitable adhesive bed, ensuring a consistent gradient to allow for effective water runoff. The tiles were laid with tight, even joints to maintain a clean and uniform appearance, and all edges were carefully finished for a neat result.

The Result

In just four days, Mrs Anderson’s garden was transformed into a stunning, multi-functional outdoor space. The raised patio provides an elegant and practical area for garden furniture and summer dining, while the new retaining walls and steps ensure safe access and a polished look.
