The Project

Mr Walton, based in Croydon, contacted us to replace his existing driveway with a more durable and visually appealing surface. The old drive had become worn over time, lacked effective drainage, and was beginning to cause problems during periods of heavy rain. He wanted a solution that would improve the look of his property, offer a hard-wearing surface for regular vehicle use, and eliminate the problems caused by poor surface water management.

Our Recommendation

Following an on-site assessment and discussion with Mr Walton about his preferences and requirements, we recommended the installation of a new block-paved driveway. Block paving provides a clean, structured finish and can be laid with precision to encourage effective water run-off. To prevent any future issues with standing water, we proposed incorporating Aco channel drains at key drainage points. In addition, the existing manhole covers would be replaced with recessed versions to ensure they sit flush with the new paving for a more seamless appearance. We scheduled the installation to take place over four days to allow for a thorough and unhurried process.

The Installation

Work began with the removal of the old surface, which included digging down to a suitable depth and clearing away all existing material. A sub-base of MOT Type 1 crushed stone was then laid and machine compacted to create a strong, stable foundation. Around the perimeter, we installed high-quality concrete edge restraints to ensure the paving would remain firmly in place.

Aco drains were fitted along the driveway’s lower edge to manage surface water effectively, and new recessed manhole covers were installed to blend in neatly with the block paving. The chosen blocks featured a timeless design, laid in a classic herringbone pattern to enhance both durability and aesthetic appeal. Once the blocks were in place, kiln-dried sand was brushed into the joints and the entire surface was compacted again to lock everything firmly together.

The Result
In just four days, Mr Walton received a smart, long-lasting driveway that greatly improves both the appearance and functionality of his property. The recessed manholes now sit flush with the surface for a clean finish, and the Aco drains are already proving effective in handling rainfall. Mr Walton was delighted with the end result and commended the team for their professionalism, attention to detail, and tidy working practices throughout the project.
