The Project

Mr White wanted to upgrade his existing driveway in Croydon, which had become uneven and untidy over time. The area was also affected by tree roots and poor water run-off, making it impractical and difficult to maintain. He was looking for a durable block paving solution that would improve both the appearance and functionality of the front of his property.

Our Recommendation

Following our initial site assessment, we recommended a complete excavation of the existing driveway with the removal of surrounding trees and their root systems to avoid future issues. To address drainage, we proposed installing a new ACO drain system at the entrance, connected to a suitable soakaway or existing drainage. Once the groundworks were complete, a strong MOT Type 1 hardcore sub-base would be compacted in layers, ready to receive the new block paving. The paving blocks, chosen in a design and colour to suit the property, would then be laid neatly on a compacted sand bed and finished with kiln-dried sand for strength and stability.

The Installation

The project began with excavation of the old driveway, clearing all debris and preparing the ground for a solid foundation. Trees around the driveway were removed, and their stumps and roots either ground out or fully excavated to prevent regrowth. All green waste was disposed of responsibly in line with regulations.

We then installed a new ACO drainage system across the driveway entrance, ensuring it was properly connected for efficient water management. A Type 1 MOT hardcore foundation was laid in layers and compacted to create the correct levels and falls. Once prepared, sharp sand was spread and compacted to provide a smooth laying surface.

The block paving was then installed in the agreed colour and pattern, with each block carefully cut and fitted around edges for a precise finish. The surface was compacted and jointed with kiln-dried sand, while edge restraints were fitted where needed to secure the paving. Finally, the site was cleaned, and all waste removed, leaving the property tidy.

The Result

The completed driveway has given Mr White’s property a fresh new look, combining practicality with modern style. The new drainage system ensures the area remains free from standing water, while the neat block paving offers a long-lasting and low-maintenance solution. Delivered in just two days, the installation has provided Mr White with an attractive and durable driveway ready for daily use.
